With funding from Arthritis Research UK and the Diet and Health Research Industry Club (DRINC), research projects explore how sulforaphane may act to slow or prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. Similarly, as quoted Health24

Sulforaphane is a bioactive compound found in vegetables, especially broccoli. Eating broccoli enhance sulforaphane in the blood, but scientists do not yet know whether the amount of sulforaphane into the joint enough to make it effective in preventing osteoarthritis. This is the one where the UAE team hope to find it, because osteoarthritis is a major cause of disability cases.

There is no effective treatment

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which gradually destroys the cartilage in the joints, especially the hands, feet, spine, hips, and knees elderly. To date, no effective treatment other than pain or recovery of joint replacement surgery.

Prof Ian Clark, of UEA's School of Biological Sciences, who led the study, said: "The UK has the aging population and developing new strategies for age-related diseases. Combating diseases such as osteoarthritis is vital to improving the quality of life of patients, but also to reduce the burden on the local economy. "

As part of a three-year project, the UEA team will also investigate the effects of other compounds in foods associated with osteoarthritis, including diallyl disulphide were found to be quite high in garlic.

Broccoli has previously been associated with reduced cancer risk, but this is the first time conducted a study of the effects of broccoli on joint health.

  4. "A chemical found mainly in broccoli but also in Brussels sprouts and cabbage reduces joint damage.A compound found in abundance in the vegetable super food slows down the destruction of cartilage in joints associated with osteoarthritis.Although surgery is very successful, it is not really an answer. Once you have osteoarthritis, being able to slow its progress and the progression to surgery is really important. Prevention would be preferable and changes to lifestyle, like diet, may be the only way to do that.’ Aging and obesity are the most common contributors to the condition, with one in five people over the age of 45 suffering with knee osteoarthritis.
